WITCH'S CHOICE

Comes a knockin' at my door
Now they enter by the score
Shouting "Witchcraft!" blaming me
Saying punished I must be

"Invoke your Goddess never more
Throw Her image to the floor
Name your sisters one, two, three
Then perhaps we'll let you be."

OCEANA, MOTHER WATER
TAKE MY BODY
COVER ME
TAKE MY SISTERS
AND THY DAUGHTERS
BACK INTO THEE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE...

They tortured Sara in the night
Raped and beat her by moonlight
Forced confessions that were lies
We listened to her tearing cries

Jane was burned on Hallows Day
All her people came to pray
We watched her die in agony
So we walk into the sea...

OCEANA, MOTHER WATER
TAKE MY BODY
COVER ME
TAKE MY SISTERS
AND THY DAUGHTERS
BACK INTO THEE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE...

Once we circled by the moons
We knew the spells, we knew the runes
True to each other, safe from harm
Living in our Mother's arms

Then they came to our shores
Bringing gods and bringing wars
Women now their slaves must be
So we walk into the sea...

OCEANA, MOTHER WATER
TAKE MY BODY, COVER ME
TAKE MY SISTERS, AND THY DAUGHTERS
BACK INTO THEE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE
SET US FREE...

The worst is sisters who have turned
Sending sisters to be burned
Betraying all we used to be
So we lose our harmony

But we will rise up once more
From the ocean to the shore
Singing magic, running free
A mighty people we will be

And we are rising up once more
From the ocean to the shore

Singing magic, running free
A gentle people we be

Gentle to the earth
Gentle to the trees
Gentle to the animals
And the Old Ones and the Young Ones
Gentle to each other
Gentle to ourselves...

OCEANA, MOTHER WATER
TAKE MY BODY, COVER ME
TAKE MY SISTERS, AND THY DAUGHTERS
BACK INTO THEE

                                                                                              Song "Witch's Choice"
by Shekhinah Mountainwater
All Rights Reserved
Based on the legend of the women during the
Burning Times of medieval Italy,
who walked by the hundreds into the sea
rather than be burned or forced
to turn in their loved ones.
Title is inspired by the film "Sophie's Choice.
In this song however,  the motif of going into the water
is transformed into a  positive return to the
Great Mother.  Not to die this time, but to live
in Her.   And our brothers are welcome too.
Never Again The Burnings!
Blessed Be.

SONG OF THE SILKIE WOMAN

I swim with the sea flowers in my hair
All the silkies love me here
Now my eyes are turning above
And my heart is tuned to earthly love

My mother takes me by the hand
To where the waters meet the land
"Go, my child, do not fear
"And know the sea is ever near."

"And if there ever comes a time
"When your lover speaks to you unkind
"Turn your back to the land, your face to the wind
"I'll be waiting here with your old sealskin."

"When you go, you must leave your skin behind,
"Taking only hand and heart and mind,
"Naked you'll stand upon the shore,
"To see your own land never more..."

And how will it be when you come for me?
Will I turn and fly back to Sul Skerie?
Will I run to hide in my old sealskin?
Or stay to love earthkin?

No, I'll not run when you find me here
I'll stand proud and the wind will take my fear
And I'll walk the land 'til I come to fly
And be one with the earth, the sea, and sky...

When I go I will leave my skin behind
Taking only hand and heart and mind
Naked I'll stand upon the shore
To see my own land ever more...

Song of the Silkie Woman

The Silkies or Selchies of Celtic legend
are half human and half seal.  They can
shed their sealskins at will and walk among
humans undiscovered.   But woe to the silkie
woman who leaves her skin unattended, for
if it should fall into the wrong hands she
will be unable to return to undersea.  And
woe to the man whose silkie wife should
happen to find her skin, for with a leap and
a splash she will be gone, leaving him with
a broken heart and a lonely soul.

The song above is based upon one traditional
legend in which a silkie woman comes willingly
to land to wed a human man, but leaves him
immediately when he speaks to her abusively
one day, puts on her skin and dives back
into the sea.
